Young changemakers community #2

Poverty alleviation + pitches

This evening we zoom in to the problem of poverty and what we can do about it! You’ll be inspired by guest speakers and put your creativity to work with thought-provoking challenges. We also give the stage to young people with their own startup idea – and connect them with the participants’ brainpower to strengthen their concepts and teams!

  • Tuesday 13th December
  • Impact HUB Amsterdam, Haarlemmerweg 10c
  • Registration starts at 6.45pm
  • 7pm – 9pm

We start the evening with two guest speakers:

Jochem Gietema, Energiekliek
Jochem studied law and philosophy, joined Enactus in 2014 and now runs his own social enterprise Energiekliek. About 750.000 households in the Netherlands struggle to pay their energy bill each month. Energiekliek tries to prevent this situation by teaching households how to save energy in a ten-week online program. Jochem will share his story about starting a social enterprise and talk about some scientific research about the impact of living in poverty.

Samantha van den Bos, Share NL
“The sharing economy offers opportunities for everyone” – at least that’s the promise. In reality this does not happen naturally. Sharing platforms such as Airbnb, Snappcar, Peerby and Konnektid tend to mainly reach higher educated people between 25 and 35 with higher incomes than the average households. Despite this fact, the sharing economy does hold the potential to benefit the poorest in society! Samantha van den Bos will talk about the Sharing Economy in the Netherlands, and poses the following challenge; How can we mobilise the sharing economy to benefit the poorest in society? Samantha is project leader “Inclusive Sharing Cities” for Share NL.

We proceed with pitches from young starting entrepreneurs;
Lena Hartog presents; A network of babysitters providing affordable childcare to support parents and children living in poverty. Femke de Bruijn: Research shows children from minority groups do less well in school than other children. Her storytelling project will help them build a better future! Somya Thakker presents her unique shelter idea to fight homelessness in India. Katerina’s Georgian restaurant will help young refugees integrate into the Dutch community.

After the short presentations the audience partakes in an interactive brainstorm session using Lean Startup and Art of Hosting tools. We end the evening with a networking “borrel”.
